Stucco & Exterior in Studio City
Stucco repair for Studio City houses, with the roof edge, window heads and wall base planned so water leaves the wall and the kitchen openings stay sealed.
Water reaches a stucco wall from the roof edge, through its openings and up from the ground, and a Studio City exterior plan starts by following each route. Gutter ends, window heads, the foot of the wall and the soil beside it all get a path that leads water away. Color and texture come up only after the drainage is settled.
From the roof edge down
Roof runoff is the first thing to trace. Where a roof edge meets a wall, a kickout of metal flashing throws the water into the gutter and off the plaster. Window and door heads carry flashing that laps over the weather barrier below it, and the cap we add for a hood duct is detailed the same way. Downspouts discharge onto a splash pad or a drain line, away from the wall. A new opening from a kitchen remodel is planned like this from the start, so the wall closes around it with no place for a trickle to hide.
Along the base of the house
The bottom edge of the wall handles splash, sprinklers and damp soil. A metal weep screed lets trapped water escape, but only while it stays clear of dirt, mulch and paving. We pull soil back from the screed, point sprinkler heads away from the plaster and, should the lot slope toward the house, correct the grade so runoff heads away from the wall. Hose bibs get a sealed collar so a slow drip cannot run down the inside of the framing.
Stucco & Exterior in Studio City: questions to settle first
Water has to be sent outward, so the cap's flange runs beneath the paper above it and lies over the paper below. The opening is framed first when the sheathing is thin. Flexible sealant closes the perimeter, and plaster is troweled in coats until the patch sits flush with the face of the wall.
Patch when the damage is a closed crack or a single hole. Recoat when the plaster is solid and only the color has dulled. Restucco when water has already gotten behind it, which shows up as hollow sounds, base stains or soft sheathing. A small test opening answers the unclear cases.
Mixing begins with a scrap of the existing finish, brushed out as a swatch and judged dry, because color moves as plaster cures. The new coat is carried to a corner, where a seam hides, and a faded wall can take a full coat to even out the face.
