A kitchen in Valley Village follows the same order of work as a kitchen in North Hollywood, Studio City, Toluca Lake, Sherman Oaks, Valley Glen or Van Nuys. Appliances are chosen early, because their spec sheets set the cabinet widths, the circuits, the gas or power at the range and the duct size at the hood. Nothing gets ordered until the drawn layout shows each appliance fitting its opening.

Spec sheets before cabinet sizes

Every appliance comes with a sheet listing its cutout, its clearances and its power or fuel needs. A built-in refrigerator needs an exact opening and a water line in a set spot. A wall oven needs a cabinet made for its cutout and often a circuit of its own. A range hood lists the duct diameter it was tested with, and shrinking that duct cuts how much air it moves. We put those figures on the drawing so the cabinet order, the electrician and the plumber all work from the same page.

Getting large pieces into the house

Before delivery we measure the route from the curb to the kitchen: the front door, the hallway turns and any step along the way. A tall refrigerator or a long stone slab has to make those turns, and a door sometimes comes off its hinges for the day. Valley Village falls under the City of Los Angeles, and LADBS handles the permit covering new circuits, gas work and venting. Its inspectors see the rough work before the drywall closes, and the appliances are set and connected after the cabinets and counters are in.
