Stucco and Exterior Walls, Patched to Match
A kitchen remodel often cuts the outside wall for a hood duct, a new window or a moved door. We plan the stucco work with the inside job so the wall closes once.
Patch, recoat or full restucco
Small cracks and a new vent hole take a patch and a color coat. Widespread cracking or failed paper behind the stucco calls for stripping a wall and starting over. We open a test area when the answer is not clear and show you what is behind it before pricing.
New openings from the inside work
Hood ducts, dryer vents, a widened window over the sink or a new door to the yard all leave a hole in the stucco. We flash each opening into the weather barrier, then lath, scratch, brown and finish so the new section blends with the old.
Matching texture and color
A patch shows when the texture or the color is off. We sample the existing finish, mix to it and carry the color coat to a natural break in the wall, such as a corner or a trim line, rather than stopping in the middle of a face.
Stucco & Exterior: questions
Often, if the patch ends at a corner or a trim line and the color can be matched. When the existing color has faded unevenly, a full color coat on that wall reads better than a patch.
The hood is usually part of a permitted kitchen remodel, and the wall penetration is covered by that permit. We include the exterior patch in the same scope.
House movement, framing shrinkage, missing control joints and water behind the paper are common causes. We look for the cause before we patch, because a crack over a moving joint comes back.
