Full Home Remodeling in Van Nuys
Whole home remodeling in Van Nuys with engineered plank floors that run from the kitchen through the house and hold their shape in dry indoor air.
Engineered plank with a plywood core is the floor we propose first for a Van Nuys whole-house remodel, because it holds its shape where solid boards move. On an inland valley lot, hard sun through large glass and dry indoor air can open gaps between strips of solid wood. Cross-layered backing resists that, so a continuous floor can run from the kitchen through the hall and into the living room.
Why the core matters
Solid boards swell and shrink with the moisture in the air, and wide ones move the most. A core built from cross-laid plywood layers fights that pull, which keeps seams tight through dry spells and damp ones. The top layer is real wood, so it can be refinished a limited number of times, and its thickness decides how many. Over a concrete slab the plan adds a moisture test and a vapor barrier before any plank is laid. Over a wood subfloor it sets the fastening: nails, glue or a floating install.
Where the floor meets the kitchen
Plank thickness is set in the plan before cabinets are ordered, so finished height is known. That matters at the dishwasher, where a taller floor can trap the machine under the counter, and at the refrigerator, whose doors still have to swing. At a tile change the transition strip lands under a closed door, where it is least seen. Appliances get a drip tray or sealed plywood beneath them, because a leak that reaches the core is the thing this floor does not forgive.
Full Home Remodeling in Van Nuys: questions to settle first
Floors go late. Planks scratch and dent, so drywall, paint and cabinet installation are finished before any are laid, with protection over them afterward. The kitchen's rough work still leads everything, since plumbing, gas and wiring come ahead of the walls closing and inspections come before insulation.
A wall can come out, and the floor then needs a patch where it stood. Planks do not meet cleanly across that strip, so the subfloor is leveled and the boards run continuous across the opening. Whether the wall holds up the roof is the other question, and an engineer answers it with a beam size.
Plank thickness and underlayment come up first, because they set the finished height that doors, dishwasher and refrigerator must clear. Cabinet layout, the appliance list and any wall changes come with them. Choosing the floor late forces raised thresholds or trimmed doors.
