Splash, steam and a mop bucket land on the same two walls of a break room, and in a North Hollywood suite those walls get a hard, glossy panel made of glass fiber and resin. Paint on bare drywall would soon peel there. The panel wipes clean, takes a scrubbing, and has caulked seams, so the cleaning crew can treat the wall like a counter.

Fiberglass panels behind the sink

These panels come in sheets glued to the wall and joined with trim strips, then sealed at every edge and around each fixture. They do not hold water, and they do not feed mold the way paper-faced board can. Behind them we use moisture-resistant board when the wall is a wet one, and plain drywall elsewhere. Panel height runs to the level where a mop or a chair back reaches, usually 4 feet, and a cap strip finishes the top.

Floors and corners that take abuse

Corners take the knocks from carts and chairs, so outside corners get a stainless or vinyl guard. The floor is sheet vinyl or tile with a coved base, which keeps water from slipping into the bottom of the wall. At the sink, a counter edge with a raised lip stops spills from running behind the cabinet. Cabinet boxes are laminate-faced so a leaking supply line does not swell them. Each choice answers one job: resist water, resist cleaning chemicals, resist impact.
