A garage ceiling that has a bedroom or other living space above it calls for heavier board, 5/8-inch Type X, which is fire-rated. Boxes, ducts and pipes that pass through the separation are detailed so they keep it intact. The door from the garage into the house belongs to the same separation, so it is checked against the code whenever its frame is touched.
