Valley Village Windows & Doors, in the Right Order

Valley Village kitchen windows and patio doors worked in order: cabinet plan, opening sizes, LADBS permit, then install, patching and trim.

Cabinet drawings come ahead of any window order in a Valley Village kitchen. The sink base, the uppers and the hood decide how wide the window over the sink can be and how low its sill can sit, and a patio door is placed where the refrigerator can still swing fully open. Once those lines are fixed on paper, the openings are sized, a header is engineered if a width grows, and the units go on order.

Steps before the wall is opened

LADBS issues the permit once the drawings show each opening, and work at the wall waits for it. Dust barriers and floor cover go up next, since the house may stay occupied through the kitchen remodel. The new units arrive and are checked against the order for size, glass type and swing direction before an old frame is touched, so a wrong unit is caught while the wall is still closed. Stucco color and texture samples are matched at this stage too.

From rough opening to finished trim

Each opening moves from removal to weather-tight before the next one is started. The old unit comes out, the framing is checked and repaired, a sloped sill pan goes in, then the window, then flashing tape lapped from the bottom up. Stucco is patched outside and drywall inside. Only after the openings are closed do the cabinets go in, followed by counters, tile and the interior casing, so the trim lines up with the finished cabinet faces. Screens and window hardware go on at the very end.
