"Any chance of a dishwasher?" That question, put to us on a first Culver City walk-through, opens the whole layout. In a small unit the dishwasher, sink and trash pull-out want to sit together, which fixes the plumbing wall, and the plumbing wall in turn decides which way the unit faces the yard. We answer with a sketch on site, then carry that sketch into the drawings.

Building the plan around one wet wall

A single wet wall holds the kitchen sink on one side and the bath on the other, so drain and vent lines share a short path down to the slab. The dishwasher goes beside the sink, the range stands at least a counter's width away, and the fridge sits at the end of the run where its door can swing clear. Windows then fall where cabinets are not, and the entry lands on the side facing the main house or the yard. Every piece is marked to scale before plan check.

Storage packed into a short run

In a small kitchen, storage decides whether the counter stays clear. We draw drawers wherever base doors would go, since a deep drawer holds pots that would otherwise stack on the counter. A tall pull-out next to the fridge carries dry goods, a corner gets a swing-out shelf, and the toe kick can hide a step stool. Upper cabinets reach the ceiling so nothing collects dust on top. A rail under the uppers keeps utensils in reach, and the trash pull-out stays beside the sink where scraps land.
