ADU Construction in Sierra Madre, Roof to Drain
Sierra Madre ADU construction with roof penetrations, covered gutters and drainage planned together, and a kitchen whose hood exits clear of the water.
Kitchen exhaust and rainwater both leave the roof of a Sierra Madre ADU, and we plan their exits together. The hood duct and the plumbing vent pierce the roof near the ridge, where the least water runs past them, while the low eave carries a metal gutter with a leaf cover. On a Sierra Madre parcel that sits in a mapped fire hazard zone, ember rules reach the gutter and the roof covering too.
Penetrations and flashing
Each pipe or duct that passes through the roof gets a metal flashing boot sealed into the underlayment, with its upslope edge tucked under the covering above it. We keep penetrations near the ridge, group them where we can, and never set one in a valley. The hood duct ends in a roof cap with a damper and ember-resistant screening. Where the roof meets a wall, step flashing and a kickout at the bottom steer water into the gutter. These details are drawn at full size so the inspector can match them on site.
Gutters, downspouts and a mapped parcel
Because Sierra Madre includes ground the state maps for fire hazard, a metal gutter with a solid cover or fine mesh keeps leaves from piling up where an ember could land. Downspouts drop into solid pipe that carries water to a dry well or a curb outlet, well clear of the unit's footing and the neighbor's lot. If the lot slopes, the discharge point sits downhill of the unit and any retaining wall. Class A roofing tops the assembly on a mapped parcel, and the city's plan check reads these details with the rest of the ADU set.
ADU Construction in Sierra Madre: questions to settle first
A full kitchen fits, and state law allows one in any ADU. In a Sierra Madre unit we run cabinets along the low wall and save the tall side for windows. A 30-inch range, a sink and a full-height fridge take about 10 feet of wall, with the hood venting up through the roof near the ridge.
The city asks for a complete ADU set. Once a Sierra Madre lot shows up on the fire hazard map, the roof plan and the wall sections spell out the Class A covering, the screened vents and the ignition-resistant siding, and those pages get a careful read in plan check.
Through the main house, in most layouts. A branch off the house water line feeds the unit with its own valve, the drain slopes to the house sewer, and a feeder from the main panel serves a subpanel inside. Each trench is set clear of the downspout lines so roof water and utilities never share a path.
