Vents with a fine metal honeycomb behind the louvers are what we specify for the attic and crawl space of a Monrovia ADU. A small building still has to breathe, and coarse screen lets wind-blown embers through. Listed ember-resistant vents keep airflow while catching sparks, and they hold up under hard sun on an inland lot. Some of Monrovia lies on the state's fire hazard maps, and on such a parcel a new unit may face ember-resistance rules.

Where the vents go and why it matters

Air enters low at the eave or soffit and leaves high at the ridge or gable, and each opening is a path for embers when it is windy. Listed vent units close that path with a baffle or a mesh fine enough to stop sparks while still meeting the code's net free area. Under a raised floor, the foundation vents get the same treatment. The roof covering is Class A, the eaves are boxed with solid soffits, and the walls take cement plaster or fiber cement, so the vents are one layer among several.

The kitchen hood and its exit

A range hood is a vent too, and it needs the same care. Ours ducts straight through the wall or roof to a cap with a damper and a metal screen, and the duct is metal along its whole run. The cooktop sits on that wall so the duct stays short and easy to clean. Counter tops are chosen for stains and daily wear, with a trivet by the range for hot pans. Plans showing the vent schedule, roof and wall assembly go through the city building department with the rest of the set.
