Dinner for a couple in a backyard unit asks a lot of a small kitchen, and on a Lake Balboa lot we plan that room before any other. The sink, range and fridge sit close enough that the cook pivots between them in place, with a clear stretch of counter between sink and cooktop for prep. Deep drawers below hold pots in plain sight, and a ducted hood carries heat and steam out through the roof.

Light, air and heat in the kitchen

An inland valley lot sees hard summer sun, so the kitchen window goes on the side that gets morning light, and a short overhang or an awning shades any glass on the afternoon side. Above the counter, LED strips under the upper cabinets light the work surface, and a ceiling fixture handles the rest. A heat pump with a ductless head keeps the room comfortable while the oven runs, and a pocket door can close the kitchen off from the sleeping area. The range sits on its own dedicated circuit, sized for an induction cooktop if that is chosen later.

Permits through LADBS

LADBS handles Lake Balboa permits for the City of Los Angeles, and its reviewers cover setback distances, how the structure carries its loads, and whether the house utilities can serve the unit. For the kitchen, the inspector looks for the dedicated appliance circuits, the hood duct running to the outdoors, and a proper vent on the sink drain. We draw the set, file it, answer each correction and meet the inspector at footings, framing, rough-in and the final sign-off for occupancy.
