"Will a stronger range hood pull damp outside air into the house?" comes up on the first walk through a San Pedro kitchen. It can, if nothing replaces the air the fan pushes out. Past a certain fan size the code calls for a make-up air path, often a ducted inlet with a damper that opens when the hood runs, and placing it is part of laying out the kitchen.

Sizing the hood and its air supply

A hood is sized to the cooktop under it and the cooking done there, and its duct is sized to the fan. When the fan moves enough air to need make-up air, the supply is ducted from outside, filtered, and tied to the hood so both run together. In a tight house a strong hood running alone can also pull exhaust back down a water heater or furnace flue, which is why we check those appliances before choosing a fan. The make-up air inlet goes where the incoming air will not blow across the burners.

Damp air at the duct ends

Wherever the hood duct and the make-up air inlet leave the house, the caps take the weather. In a coastal setting we specify stainless or coated aluminum caps with a back-draft damper, set into a flashed opening, and a duct run kept short and nearly straight. Fasteners at the cap are stainless. Inside, the duct is sealed with foil tape and insulated where it passes through an unheated attic, so damp air that does get in does not condense on the cold metal and drip back toward the hood.
