Laminated low-e glass in a Lomita ADU skylight lets daylight fall on the kitchen counter while holding back most of the UV and heat that hard sun carries. The laminated layer keeps the glass in place if it ever breaks, which suits a pane set over a work surface. We place the skylight early, since it has to land between rafters and over the counter run, and that pins down where the kitchen goes.

Fitting the skylight to the roof

A skylight on a small ADU roof is framed between rafters with a doubled header at each end, and a curb raises the unit above the roof surface. Flashing laps into the underlayment at the top and sides so water runs around it, and a sloped light well carries daylight down through the ceiling insulation. On a low-slope roof, a curb-mounted model with its own pitch sheds water better. A venting model can open to let cooking heat out of a small kitchen. A shade fitted inside the well cuts glare when needed.

A kitchen along the long wall

The kitchen runs down the longest wall of the main room to give the counter every inch the footprint allows. A 30-inch range sits between two prep stretches under a ducted hood, the sink lands beneath a window, and a tall refrigerator closes the run at the far end. The skylight sits over the main prep stretch, where the light does the most good. Across from the run, a small table fits where the plan leaves room, and the bath sits behind the kitchen wall so the two share a drain.
