A reflective cool roof is the first material we specify on a Cerritos ADU. A white or light gray covering turns back much of the sun that would otherwise heat the ceiling, so the unit's mini split runs less through a hot inland afternoon. Paired with deep insulation and radiant barrier sheathing, it keeps the kitchen comfortable, which matters in a small room where the oven and cooktop already add heat of their own.

Insulation, glass and shade

Above the ceiling we blow in loose-fill insulation to a depth that meets the energy rules with margin, and seal every light and fan opening so attic air stays out. On a vaulted design, rigid foam over the roof deck does the same job. Windows that take the late-day sun get low solar gain glass, and an overhang or awning shades the main glass door. Light-colored cement plaster or fiber cement on the walls rounds out the shell, so the whole unit reflects heat from every side it can.

Deep drawers and a tall pantry

In a compact kitchen, drawers do more work than doors. We fit base cabinets with full-extension drawers for pots and dishes, set a tall pantry beside the fridge and turn the corner into a carousel or a blind-corner pull-out. A rail along the backsplash holds utensils off the counter. With the microwave in a drawer under the counter, the upper cabinets stay open for plates and glasses, and a shallow shelf over the sink holds what gets used every day.
