Cabinet doors cut from rift-sawn white oak hold their shape in a Cerritos kitchen where flat-sawn boards might cup. The grain runs nearly straight through the board, so it swells and shrinks less as an inland house dries out under hard sun and warm wind. Doors stay flat, the gaps between them stay even, and the finish has less movement to crack along its joints.

Boxes, doors and the finish on them

Behind the oak fronts, cabinet boxes are built from plywood with sealed edges, which holds screws well and tolerates a drip better than particleboard. Wide doors are made as frame and panel, with the center panel floating so it can move without splitting the frame. Painted doors use a fiberboard center, since painted solid wood shows a hairline at every joint once it moves. A sprayed, cured topcoat on all faces, including the backs, slows moisture exchange from both sides so a door does not bow toward its drier face.

Counters and floors beside a bright window

Sunlight through a big window can reach the counter and the floor for hours at a time. Quartz with a high resin content may shift in tone where the light lands, so near a large window we lean toward sintered stone or natural granite. Wood floors there get a finish with UV inhibitors, and we mention at selection that a rug outline can still appear eventually. Window film or a deeper overhang outside can cut the glare. Each of these choices goes onto the finish schedule with its reason written beside it.
