Kitchen Remodeling in Palms

Navon Home plans a Palms kitchen first: hood duct, fan noise, gas, panel and circuits drawn with the cabinets, then LADBS review and the finishes after.

In a Palms house we draw the kitchen before any other room, since its layout decides where the gas line, the drains and the new circuits will run. Urban lots in general sit close to the next building, so the hood duct, the exhaust outlet and the hum of the fan reach past the property line. That is why the duct route and the fan are picked with the cabinets, well before tile or color.

Duct routes and fan noise on a close lot

A short, straight duct with few elbows lets the fan clear the air without running on high. Where an outside wall faces a neighbor a few steps away, the exhaust may go up through the roof, and the cap is placed away from windows and air intakes. An inline or remote blower mounted in the attic keeps the motor away from the cooktop and lowers the sound in the room. We size the duct to the hood outlet and avoid reducing it, which chokes the airflow and makes the fan louder.

Gas, the panel and the LADBS permit

Before the layout is fixed we open the electrical panel to see whether it has space and capacity for an induction range, a microwave drawer or more countertop circuits. If it does not, a service upgrade enters the plan early. A gas range needs a line sized for its rating and a shutoff within reach. Palms is a Los Angeles neighborhood, so the permit is reviewed by LADBS. The same order of work applies to a kitchen in Culver City, Mar Vista or Beverly Hills, with the permit filed wherever that address belongs.
