Old kitchen tile in a Gardena house may sit on a mortar bed thick enough to lift the floor well above the next room. That buried layer only shows its depth once a corner is opened. Finding it changes the plan: either the bed comes out, which adds demolition and a subfloor check, or it stays and the new flooring, cabinet heights and dishwasher opening are drawn around the higher floor.

Measuring the buried layer

A tile near a doorway or under the old dishwasher is lifted, and the depth to the framing or slab is measured. A thick bed can hold wire mesh and is heavy, so removing it is slow, dusty work that takes the room down to its base. Where a slab lies under it, the surface may need grinding or leveling compound. Over wood framing, the subfloor gets checked for rot or soft spots once the bed is gone. Each path becomes a priced line, with the method written out.

What the height decides

If the mortar bed stays, the finished floor sits higher, and a transition strip or a ramped threshold meets the adjoining room. The dishwasher needs enough height between the floor and the underside of the counter, so the cabinet base height is set to match. The toe-kick, the range and the refrigerator all reference the same level. If the bed comes out, the new layers are chosen so the kitchen floor lines up flush with the rooms around it. The drawing shows the finished height either way, so the cabinet order is right.
