The galley in a backyard unit has to do a full kitchen's work along one wall: wash, prep, cook and store, with room for a second person to pass while the fridge door is open. That run gets drawn first for a Los Angeles unit, since the sink wall fixes where drains leave the slab and the hood fixes where a duct exits the roof. Bedroom and bath are fitted around it afterward.

Plan check through LADBS

Los Angeles work is permitted by the City of Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety, known as LADBS. We assemble the drawing set, submit it and write a reply to every correction the plan checker returns. Reviewers there look at how far the unit stands from the rear and side lines, how a wall close to a neighbor is rated for fire, and whether the sewer and power routes on paper match the parcel. If the lot carries a historic or other overlay, that brings its own review, and we confirm it from city parcel records before drawing.

Sizing the galley to the footprint

A studio can carry a 24-inch range, a counter-depth fridge and a single-bowl sink on one straight wall, with upper cabinets climbing to the ceiling for storage. A one-bedroom plan may afford an L with a short return for chopping space. In either case the hood is ducted outdoors, the range gets a dedicated circuit, and a dishwasher, if wanted, can be an 18-inch model. We mark each appliance on the floor plan so the electrical load is counted before the panel question arrives, which keeps surprises out of plan check.
